Welcome New Teachers Day Math CAMPPPers!

We thank you for your willingness to participate in this exciting professional learning opportunity! The Math CAMPPP wiki will be used to support our professional learning community. You are invited to tell us about yourself and share what you hope to get out of Math CAMPPP 2011.
Hello, my name is Catherine Hildebrandt, and I too, am a recent grad from Lakehead Univeristy's Education program. I graduated with P/J certification and spent the spring and summer upgrading to Intermediate and Spec Ed. I have an interview with York Region (actually in about an hour) and I am also hoping for an interview with the Simcoe Board. I also have a position at Georgian College for this fall teaching a math course that covers grades 6-11 math for students who want to go into health sciences.
I am very excited to attend the CAMPP and get some ideas about how to explore intermediate math concepts.

I am very much looking forward to Math CAMPP 2011! Ruth Beatty has told me what a great experience Math CAMPP is and I cannot wait to find out for myself. My name is Bonita (Boni) Coons and I am a recent graduate of the P/J BEd program at Lakehead Orillia; I graduated in June of this year. In May, I completed an ABQ course that allows me to teach general science at the Intermediate level. Math has always been one of my favourite subjects, I wanted to have math as one of my specialties in my HBASc degree, but alas, Lakehead Orillia did not offer enough math courses to make it possible. During my practicum placements, math was my favourite subject to teach, I enjoyed coming up with innovative and fun ways for students in the class to learn math. I hope that by attending Math CAMPP 2011, I will learn more about differentiated learning with respect to math, as well as ways in which math can be integrated into other curriculum areas. I am also looking forward to catching up with my friends next week and meeting new friends!

My name is Kristen McGuire and I am a graduate ofLakeheadUniversity. I completed my Bachelor of Education in 2010 and shortly after I accepted a position with the Bruce Grey Catholic District School Board on the Occasional teacher list. I completed my first LTO as a Literacy Support teacher at the end of June 2011. I am going to be starting my second LTO as a grade ¾ classroom teacher this fall and I am very excited about this opportunity. I am really looking forward to attending Math Camppp and I hope to gain more experience planning units, assessing students thinking as well assessing where my own strengths and weaknesses are in math teaching so that I may continue to grow as an effective math educator. I hope to gain new ideas that I can take with me and share with other teachers whom I will be working with this fall. I look forward to meeting you all next week!

Hi, my name is Leonique (Nikki) Frumau. I recently graduated from Lakehead University in Orillia. I am qualified in primary, junior and intermediate. I have taken special education part I. I am currently hoping to get an interview for a supply job in Simcoe County. My goal is to become a math/reading/kindergarten specialist. I really want to be THAT teacher that gets kids excited about math. The teacher who turns kids on to math and has them leaving the classroom saying "math is cool". I am hoping that math camp will provide me with additional tools to be able to make my goal come true. I am also hoping to network with other professionals who are interested in math so that when I do have a student or classroom that I am struggling with I have a peers to bounce ideas off of and get new ideas from. See you all next week!

Hello Everyone! My name is Jennifer Ouellet. I live in Penetanguishene, Ontario on the shores of beautiful Georgian Bay. I am a mother to two dynamic children that follow their own paths in life. My 16 year old is currently in Thailand for 1 year on a Rotary exchange. She just left on Sunday so this is in the fore front of my mind currently. My 9 year old son is a thinker that enjoys golfing and skiing. I am married to an amazing man that recently supported me in such a way that allowed me to achieve my life long dream of getting my undergraduate degree and teaching certificate. That endeavour led me to attend Math Camppp 2011 by invitation from Dr. Ruth Beatty (Thanks for thinking of me!).
From Math Camp I hope to learn more about how to teach (or facilitate) mathematical thinking within students. During my practicum I noticed that many students did not seem to want to think about math; they simply wanted to know "the answer". During Math Camppp I hope to learn more about how students think about math and how to foster good mathematical thinking behaviours in a format that does not feel like "work" to a student. In my experience, if I can make learning fun then the students will learn, sometimes without even realizing it! An added bonus to attending math camp is to gather resources for teaching math and to evaluate my own notions of teaching math in relation to what is happening accross the province. I enjoy learning and have missed being envolved in the education system for the last few months so I cannot wait to attend Math Camppp. I look forward to meeting you all!

Hi! My name is Jessie Clarke and I live in the country just outside of Orillia. Like my classmates above, I also graduated from Lakehead University's Orillia Campus this past June with my HBAScBEd P/J specializing in biology and psychology. I am very thankful to have been asked to participate in Math Camppp 2011 and I look forward to the opportunity to connect with other professionals in the education world during this week. I have always enjoyed math as a student and I am very interested in discovering ways to promote such a love for math in students today. I have found that math often gets a bad rap from students and I hope that Math Camppp will provide me with new ideas for getting students to see math in a favourable light. I am also looking forward to exploring the different ways in which people approach math problems and seeing alternative ways of thinking that will broaden my math horizon. Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all algorithms...independent thought and creative solutions here we come! Let the fun begin!

Thank you and we look forward to working with you at CAMPPP!
